A village that needs a car
Barnes feels like a village, and in many ways it travels like one. There's no Underground station, the trains from Barnes and Barnes Bridge stations run to Waterloo, and with Hammersmith Bridge closed to cars in recent years, trips north usually loop round via Putney Bridge. That makes a pre-booked minicab in Barnes useful for everything from the weekly shop to a late train home.
Around Barnes
We pick up from Church Road and the shops around the pond, the Olympic Studios cinema, the WWT London Wetland Centre, Castelnau and the roads beside Barnes Common. The route to our base runs across the Common on Rocks Lane or along the Lower Richmond Road, so most Barnes pickups are a short drive away.
Barnes to Heathrow
West London's airport is handy from Barnes. A taxi from Barnes to Heathrow usually runs through East Sheen to Chiswick Bridge and the M4, and takes around 30 to 40 minutes. For Gatwick, allow about an hour. We track your flight on the way back and can meet you in arrivals.
Pets, families and the school run
Plenty of Barnes households have a dog, and our pet friendly taxi covers vet visits and kennels. Families use our school run taxi for regular runs, and neighbours in East Sheen and Roehampton are just down the road.
Boat Race day
Each spring, the Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge runs from Putney past Barnes to the finish near Chiswick Bridge, and the riverside around Barnes Bridge and the Terrace fills with spectators. Roads near the river get very busy, so on race day book early and agree a pickup point a few streets back from the Thames.
Out and about in Barnes
The OSO Arts Centre by the pond, the independent shops on Church Road and the High Street, and the riverside pubs along the Terrace give Barnes plenty to do. The village is easy to explore on foot, but getting there with friends or home again after an evening out is simpler in a booked cab.
Barnes Common and the level crossings
Barnes Common is a local nature reserve of grassland and woodland, crossed by Rocks Lane and Mill Hill Road, with Barnes station sitting right on its edge. The railway also brings Barnes its best-known traffic problem: the two level crossings on Vine Road, where the barriers come down often and can hold up cars for several minutes at busy times. Drivers usually plan routes around them, but if your pickup is near Vine Road or the station, allow a few extra minutes for time-critical journeys such as an early flight or a train from Waterloo. Pickups from the station forecourt or the Common's car parks are straightforward if you tell us which one.
